New Cr(VI)/VOC Regulations Pending
On October 1, 2004, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) announced plans to significantly tighten the occupation exposure standard for hexavalent chromium (CrVI). Under the new OSHA standard, the permissible exposure level (PEL) for CrVI will be reduced from 52 to 1.0 microgram per cubic meter of air as an 8-hour time weighted average.
Chromate pigments are still used by US coating manufactures, primarily for aerospace primers, pretreatment/wash primers and coil coatings.
The increasing restriction of chromate pigments will obviously make nonhazardous alternatives, such as Moly-White, ever more attractive to coating formulators.
VOC restrictions are also being tightened and these changes are driving many reformulation efforts in the industry.
